Mortality in acute upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage: a six-year survey from the University Hospital of Wales.

چکیده
In a retrospective survey of normal hospital practice, 583 patients were admitted between March 1972 and 1978 because of haematemesis or melaena. Sixty (10 3y%) of these patients died; most deaths occurred in elderly patients (mean age 75 years) 75% of whom had a serious medical problem which complicated the situation. Malignancy, cardiovascular disease and respiratory problems were the most commonly associated factors. The attitude towards both emergency investigation and surgical intervention was very conservative and any reduction in mortality would require a concerted effort to deal with the special problems in elderly patients who are at particular risk.

An audit of hospital admissions for acute upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage.
A retrospective survey was made of all 189 patients admitted with acute upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage to the Belfast City Hospital in one year. The commonest single reason for admission was peptic ulcer disease, but this was lower than in other published series from the United Kingdom. Overall mortality was 4.8%. The majority of patients did not require either blood transfusion or surgery....
متن کاملEffects of fibrinolytic inhibitors on mortality from upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage.
OBJECTIVE To see whether fibrinolytic inhibitors are of value when given to patients with upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage. DESIGN Meta-analysis of six randomised double blind placebo controlled trials. Two methods used for obtaining an overall estimate of effect, including a random effects model incorporating any heterogeneity of outcome in the estimate of the overall treatment effect. S...
متن کاملUPPER GASTROINTESTINAL BLEEDING AND ACUTE PAINFUL EPIGASTRIC MASS DUE TO RUPTURE OF HYDATID CYST INTO THE DUODENUM
Various complications of hydatid cyst have been recognized to date. We have encountered one such complication-rupture of hydatid cyst to the duodenum leading to upper gastrointestinal bleeding in a 40 year old male, who referred with severe right upper quadrant (RUQ) pain and gastrointestinal bleeding of a few hours' duration. Laparotomy revealed a cyst (7 x 15 cm) in the left lobe of the ...
متن کاملRisk assessment after acute upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage.
The aim of this study was to establish the relative importance of risk factors for mortality after acute upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage, and to formulate a simple numerical scoring system that categorizes patients by risk. A prospective, unselected, multicentre, population based study was undertaken using standardised questionnaires in two phases one year apart. A total of 4185 cases of acu...
متن کاملNon-variceal upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage: guidelines.
1.0 INTRODUCTION Acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding is the commonest emergency managed by gastroenterologists. It has an incidence ranging from approximately 50 to 150 per 100 000 of the population each year, the incidence being highest in areas of the lowest socioeconomic status. An audit of patients admitted to hospital in the UK published in 1995 reported 11% mortality in patients admitte...
